In Strange Company, a delightful collection of short essays, Jean Ryan brings us closer to the natural world. From lizards to lady bugs, from the inscrutable sloth to the resplendent quetzal, Ryan reveals some of our commonalities with earth’s creatures and hints at the lessons we might learn from them.

Do lizards fall in love? What do sloths think about all day? Why is the blood of a horseshoe crab so valuable? Do starlings flock for fun? Can a parrot serve as a therapist? Do turtles ever grow bored with their long lives? Why would a crow foster a kitten? Can snails be fearless?

These are just a few of the questions Ryan poses in Strange Company as she invites the reader on a wild journey through land, sea and sky. While these essays acknowledge our responsibility to Mother Nature, the insights they offer are affirmative and heartening. With her precise, elegant prose, Ryan draws us into the tantalizing world of animals and their oddities.

Strange Company 1 Jean Ryan

In her stunning new essay collection, Jean Ryan accomplishes what few writers can: educating while also provoking self-reflection. In an utterly unique way, she marries curiosity about nature with curiosity about the human condition. I’ve read Ryan’s fiction and consider it among the best writing I’ve ever read. And then, to my surprise (mild simply because I would expect no less from someone this gifted), she presents essays about animals, insects and human beings with the same depth and perceptiveness in her fiction.

Jean's talent is unique. These essays ignite my curiosity and fascination in ways I experienced as a child learning about the world around me for the first time. Each short essay is perfectly contained and written in absolutely precise language. She manages to keep the reader engrossed while wondering, “How did she do that?” I always have the sense with her writing that what I have read could not have been one word longer or shorter. Her essays and stories are like looking at a Fabergé egg: nothing is missing, and nothing needs to be added. Magic with words.

Strange Company is a book to be both devoured and savored. It manages to be stunning and delicate at the same time. When finished with one of her essays, I have the feeling that I’ve just enjoyed a perfect meal. The information she provides about these animals and insects and, in many cases, her interactions with them either directly or as a most astute observer, is thoroughly captivating. We see each subject through Ryan’s eyes as they connect with our minds. Layered, textured, eloquent and elegant, Strange Company is a book I will not forget.

Strange Company 1 Jean Ryan Reviews

I recently purchased Strange Company - a lovely collection of essays by Jean Ryan. What a treasure! Well researched and cleverly written stories of everything from lizards to mayflies to snails, exposing fascinating, little known secrets of nature. Entertaining, educational, inspired - it is a "must have".

"Reflections of Wonderful and Amazing Animals"

What made the experience of listening to Strange Company the most enjoyable?
I wasn't sure what to expect... Is it about cute animals bonding like on Animal Planet? There IS some of that. But it's much more. It is deeper, why animal behavior reflects meaning to so many. It does so without projecting traits identified as "human" onto the different species. I got a lot of information that I didn't know.

Who was your favorite character and why?
All of the animals were portrayed positively. I can't suggest any favorite.

Which character – as performed by Nikiya Palombi – was your favorite?
I was hesitant with Niklya's narration... only for about the first minute! The essays flowed, and she became an intricate part of my enjoyment of this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It isn't a long book and the pace flows from subject to subject very well. I will be relistening soon. It's that interesting and well read

Any additional comments?
I listen to a lot of audio books and every once in awhile.one really grabs me. This is one of that kind. Not in my usual range of listening material. Very good though! This copy was provided at no charge by Mark McNease, one of favorite authors. I'm happy to provide an honest review. Voluntarily, I think I'm suppose to disclose.

No Animals were harmed in the writing or narration of this work!!!! LOL
Regular readers of this blog know how packed my schedule is. It’s not often that I have time to step out into nature and just observe the beauty around me but oh, how I crave it. Strange Company allowed me to do that if only for a short while.

Strange Company is a collection of nature essays about all sorts of things. Do animals feel compassion? Do they think as humans do? If the act of bleeding out a rare Horseshoe crab for the sake of science isn’t damaging to the creature itself, does it make it right to keep doing it? What about pesticides? Do you ever think about the impact that they might have on say… a bird’s food supply?

On a personal note, I absolutely believe that animals feel compassion. Every pet I’ve ever had has connected with me in some way. After the death of my mother, my dog would not leave my side. Years ago when I was diagnosed with Lupus and seriously questioned if I could survive it, my cat was right there, as I spent days in bed trying to work up enough energy just to go to work. So it’s no surprise to me that domesticated animals or even those in the wild can feel compassion. Just look into their eyes!

What I loved about this collection is that although each essay is short, often only a few pages long, they gave me a lot to think about. There’s a little bit of science for those who like facts, but there’s also a lot of heart. Ryan is a nature lover and it shows in her writing. I’ve read and enjoyed her work before and I am happy to say I enjoyed this collection as well.
I absolutely loved this book. I would recommend it to anyone who has a love of nature and wildlife. Looking forward to more stories from this gifted writer.
